MINI + Motorclassica 2016.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of MINI’s domination at the 1966 Bathurst 500, in which the first 9 places were taken by the MINI Cooper S. Never before, or again has one car held such a dominance over Mount Panorama as the John Cooper tuned MINI. Its short wheel base, balanced weight distribution, powerful engine and light body made them perfect for the demanding Bathurst track. The large Chryslers, Triumphs and Datsuns did well on the straights. However, the fleet of MINIs were able to brake late into corners and accelerate out early, setting them up to attack the fast straights and storm ahead. Without any weaknesses and built to be simple and reliable they were literally unbeatable.
Behind the wheel of the first placed MINI Cooper S were two legends of motor racing, Finnish driver Rauno Aaltonen and Australian Bob Holden. Aaltonen would go on to win the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally the following year in another MINI Cooper S while Bob Holden backed up his performance in the Australian Touring Car Championships for years to come. The MINI was forever adored by motorsport fans for its incredible handling and giant beating form. Today the MINI John Cooper Works range continues in the same spirit, giving drivers astonishing handling, loads of power and plenty of thrill.
From Friday 21 till Sunday 23 October we are celebrating our incredible racing heritage at the 2016 Motorclassica, held in Melbourne at the Royal Exhibition Building. To help us celebrate, Rauno Aaltonen and Bob Holden themselves will be there with the very car they drove to victory. We will also have the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch on display while the MINI Carbon Edition, MINI Convertible and MINI Clubman will be available for test drives all weekend. The weekend is a great opportunity to get a first-hand experience of the spirit of MINI, and to meet two motorsport legends. Click below to buy tickets for Motorclassica.
